SELF-EXPRESSION

Fashion is one of the uniformed diversities in nature, often used to express personal style, cultural identity and values. Clothing has become a powerful symbol in feminism activism. Although trends and styles are often influenced by seasons, fashion is an art of will.

And a personal style is what you need to create your own art. You’re the canvas, you’re the artist. A timeless and consistent way of reflecting your personality and lifestyle.

Personal style helps an individual readjust and reinterpret fashion trends in a way that seems comfortable and authentic to them.

WHY YOU NEED A PERSONAL STYLE?

Creating a personal style is a journey of self-love, experimentation and most importantly, confidence.

Looking in a mirror isn’t just enough, we should love what we see. And this is all about looks, but finding your strength, intelligence and worth.

Unrealistic body standards pushed by the media should never bring us down. Wear outfits that outline with your personal style, get inspiration from celebrities or influencers that represent your body image, feel comfortable in your skin and glow with pride in your appearance.

HOW TO CREATE A PERSONAL STYLE

  • Define you. Think about your lifestyle, preferences and values. Understand your body type and your colors.

  • Invest and Explore. Take a good look at what you already own. What makes you feel good when you put it on? Try out different styles and find out what works for you.

  • Gather inspirations. This where the social media comes in handy. Pay attention to styles or outfits that catch your eye. A mood board or Pinterest board would help to visually collect your style inspirations.

  • Expand your horizon. Don’t be afraid to try new styles. Something you wouldn’t normally wear could be what’s meant for just you.

  • Invest in the basics. Timeless pieces are a strong foundation for every wardrobe. They never go out of style (e.g., well-fitted jeans, a simple white shirt, a classic blazer).

  • Discover your color palette. What complement your skin? Neutral tones? Bold colors? Or a mix of both? A consistent color palette will you help create good outfits.

  • Always prioritize comfort along with style. Focus on clothes that fit well, they give you pride in your stride.

  • The highlights. No outfit is complete without accessories (bags, jewelry, hats, scarves, glasses). Try different accessories to see what complements your style. It could be your signature look.

  • Be patient. A personal style takes times. Trust your instincts and watch your style develop naturally.

  • Again, Confidence. What makes you feel good may not be popular, but this is about you and your personality. Your perspective will change and so will your style, and that’s completely fine. It’s all about expressing who you are at any given moment.

FEMININITY?

Wearing feminine styles should be a symbol of confidence and pride in one’s identity. Traditional feminine qualities such as elegance, grace, and softness should be a source of strength rather than weakness.

On the other hand, it isn’t all about appearing delicate. Fashion can be used to challenge stereotypes by blending softness with bold elements (e.g., pairing a floral dress with combat boots).

Through your personal style, you can redefine what femininity means to you. Modern feminism celebrates femininity—softness and strength are not mutually exclusive.

You may wonder how your wardrobe would help advocate for equal rights.

FASHION AND FEMINISM

Modern feminism uses fashion as a tool to fight for the following movements -

  • Choice. Freedom to choose and wear what we want or what aligns with out values, such as hijabs or loose-fitting attire. The emphasis is on personal expression rather than societal expectations. "Your body, your choice," regardless of gender.

  • Inclusivity. Modern feminism advocates for the representation of all body types, skin tone, genders and abilities. Diversity is one of the unique qualities of nature. It deserves to be represented, even in fashion.

  • Embracing femininity. Celebrating women and traditionally feminine clothing (like dresses and curvy silhouettes), while embracing power dressing (tailored suits or blazers). None of these takes away femininity from a lady. We are all beautiful in different ways. Curves do not make a lady a *** toy, neither does it define femininity.

  • Gender fluidity. Fashion is evolving from the traditional male and female clothing to androgynous and unisex clothing.

  • Ethics. Modern Feminism push against the exploitation of workers (predominantly women) and harm of the planet. Eco-friendly and thrift culture are gaining popularity.

  • Unrealistic beauty standards. Feminists fight against such beauty ideals driven by the fashion industry. Hashtags like #BodyPositivity, #SelfLove and #LoveYourBody have shifted focus towards self acceptance.

Fashion in feminism celebrates diversity and promotes an inclusive society. Your personal style is welcomed in modern feminism. If you’re the artist, we’re your audience.

From pantsuits to corsets, fashion is a platform for gender equality, diversity and inclusion, non stereotypical expressions and promoting body positivity.

Embrace yourself and express your identity with confidence.
